The Recordings of Sidney Bechet
Mal Collins has been a big supporter of the Sidney Bechet Society since the society was first formed. He updated the Bechet discography in June 2011 and he has graciously allowed us to post it on our site. Here’s a little information about Mal:
Mal Collins was born in Hartlepool in the North of England in 1950. He bought his first Sidney Bechet records and a soprano sax in 1963 and never looked back, although it took over 40 more years to acquire all Bechet’s commercially-released recordings. He gave up on soprano sax, but plays a mean piano and some clarinet strictly for his own amusement, has lived in France and Holland over the years and speaks fluent French (something of an advantage with the Bechet story).
He spent 33 years in the music business with one company, starting off at English Decca and ending up inside the multiple-merged global conglomerate Universal Music, visiting 25 countries along the way. Now retired through good health, he still loves Bechet first (as well as Billie, Pres, Django & many others), reads a lot about jazz, and hopes – since the biographies which Bechet merits have already been written – to write something one day on Bechet the Composer, and on the clarinet in jazz.
