Vince Giordano and Catherine Russell — The Sidney Bechet Society, a clearinghouse for traditional jazz in New York City, begins its 15th concert season with this appropriate double bill. Its headliner is Mr. Giordano, an impeccable throwback who keeps his band, the Nighthawks, in fighting trim with a regular gig at Sophia’s Restaurant; also on board is Ms. Russell, a jazz singer with a husky tone but a bright temperament, with a band that includes the venerable jazz impresario George Wein on piano.

Friends Gathered Around in Celebration of Bechet

The gig by the clarinetist Evan Christopher on Monday night took place in a theater, but the language of the show was house party. It was sponsored by the Sidney Bechet Society, which since 1997 has promoted music associated with Bechet — which is to say New Orleans and Chicago jazz of the 1920s.
