THE SPIRIT OF SIDNEY:
A ROCKING EVENING with THE SIDNEY BECHET SOCIETY:
Vince Giordano, Catherine Russell and George Wein
October 12, 2012
The Kaye Playhouse on the east side of Manhattan rocked for a few hours last Wednesday night (October 10, 2012) when the Sidney Bechet Society took charge — presenting Vince Giordano and his All-Stars, singer Catherine Russell, jazz patriarch / pianist George Wein.
Most people know Vince as the sparkplug and spiritual leader of the Nighthawks — for about thirty-five years now — and we love and admire him while he and the fellows are ripping through those Jazz Age charts and the dancers twirl. He’s a wonderful string bassist, bass saxophonist, tubaist, and quite a good singer (although he always suggests that our approval is based on the consumption of alcohol). But few know him as a first-rate leader of smaller groups, playing on and off the paper. And one of the most delightful things about tadacip between “jam session” and “reading charts,” both of them certainly potentially delightful but also possibly onerous if out of balance. Vince’s band beautifully balanced between free-blowing improvisation and expert playing of arranged passages and backgrounds, so the ear was never bored and their performances had lovely dramatic shapes.
